Community Parent Volunteer Programme
First and foremost we are a group of trained parents who offer parent to parent support to families.
Community Parents visit families, with a child under 4. living in the Sure Start area of North Lowestoft. We try where possible to meet with the family during pregnancy or following the birth of a baby. We work with families who ask for a Community Parent and we also accept referrals from health professionals and other organisations.
We have our own life experiences and skills and can use these when offering support to the family. We offer a cartoon based information pack and can help by offering and discussing the information in a kind and friendly way.
We are not professionals and we do not advise but we do support to get the help you need.
We can help you to make appointments and can also come with you to places like Parent and Toddler groups, medical appointments or other appointments such as C.A.B or the Benefits Office (where an extra pair of hands is often useful especially if you have small children). If you would like to go along to a Sure Start group activity but are worried that you will not know anyone your Community Parent will go along with you for the first few weeks until you make new friends and get to know people. We don't do baby-sitting or housework, but we can bring along our bag of toys and show you games that you can play with your children.
We have our own 'meet the Families' drop-in which is just for families who have a Community Parent, to help you build confidence and to meet other parents.
We try to be the friendly face and the helping hand that everyone needs at some time.
We are here to help - JUST GIVE US A CALL.
TRAINING
The training programme is one day a week for 12 weeks. During this time volunteers develop their own existing skills as well as learning about child protection, communication (including how to be a good listener), child development, domestic violence, equal opportunities, personal safety and what it is like to be a volunteer. Volunteers learn how to put together their own learning portfolios of their own work. After the twelve weeks and successful completion of the course volunteers will receive a Level 1 or 2 Accreditation in Community parenting from the Open College Network. Volunteers get FREE childcare when training and when they are visiting families.
